Ewan McGregor will play the title role in the Amor Towles adaptation of “A Gentleman in Moscow,” which will show on Paramount+ and Showtime.

McGregor will play Count Alexander Rostov, who experiences the Russian revolution and goes from being wealthy to being penniless. McGregor has also appeared in “Halston” and the Star Wars trilogy. Unaware of the outside world, he is banished by a Soviet court to an expensive hotel’s attic room, where he “discovers the true importance of friendship, family, and love.” “It’s a terrific, wonderful narrative, and I am extremely happy to get to play such a fabulous role,” added McGregor, who will also produce the series.

Through Tom Harper’s Popcorn Storm Pictures, Entertainment One will collaborate with Paramount Global’s VIS international studio subsidiary to develop the series.

The comedy will premiere on Paramount+ in other countries and on Showtime in the United States.

Ben Vanstone will oversee the show’s production and executive produce it (“All Creatures Great and Small”). Executive producers include Harper (“War and Peace”), Xavier Marchand (“Nautilus”), and Towles.

It’s a rare and delicious treat, and I fell in love with the book the moment I picked it up six years ago, said Harper. We are thrilled that Ewan will play the Count and grateful to Amor for tasking this great team with bringing the Metropol to life.

In the upcoming film “Everest,” McGregor will play mountaineer George Mallory. He will next voice Sebastian J. Cricket in Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” for Netflix.
