The Lost City is one of two adventure films released in 2022. Uncharted may have not been exactly what fans wanted from an adaptation. However, as a movie all its own, detached from the massively popular video game series, it was a fun adventure movie.
The same is The Lost City except that it is better in a majority of ways. What it lacks in action set-pieces and puzzle-solving, it makes for with great comedic lines from this terrific cast. Most of the best lines are seemingly front-loaded into the movie for whatever reason which is both good and bad. There will be spoilers ahead.
8 “I Feel Like A Nerdy Figure Skater”
This line was said by Sandra Bullock’s character, Loretta, in the film. Her sequenced jumpsuit is one of the oddest things in The Lost City. Nothing about it says book tour. When she calls herself a nerdy figure skater, that is spot on. No one, besides figure skaters, where something like that.
The choice was made to create a lot of comedic moments and lines in the film. She is like a walking disco ball in the jungle which does not help her escape her kidnappers easily.
7 “History Had A Ton Of Nudity In It”
Allison, Patti Harrison’s character in The Lost City, is secretly one of the best characters in the movie. Every line from her is pure gold. This is one of her best lines, said around the beginning wherein Loretta is getting ready to walk out on stage. Lorretta, Allison, and Beth are talking about inaccuracies in history.
That’s when Allison spouts her line about history being full of nude people. It’s such an obvious statement but her delivery makes it work. Patti Harrison also has one of the funniest sketches from the most recent season of I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.
6 “Can You Rip Off Dash’s Shirt?”
Loretta is not thrilled with the idea of doing this press tour. She is still upset over her husband’s death and just barely squeaks out an ending so that the book can be published. If she has to do the tour she at least wants to talk about something more interesting than romance schlock, as she refers to her books.
After a hilarious entrance from Channing Tatum’s character, Alan, Loretta calls on a girl in the audience who looks studious. Unfortunately for Loretta, this random girl wants what every girl in the audience wants, for Alan to rip his shirt off.
5 “I Said Don’t Make It Creepy”
The main villain of The Lost City, Abigail who is played by Daniel Radcliffe, kidnaps Loretta because he needs her to translate something. Loretta’s husband was trying to uncover a lost tribe wherein an ancient crown was said to be buried.
That’s what Abigail wants, the crown. He’ll do anything to get it even kidnap a schlocky romance novelist. When his henchmen bring Loretta to his estate, he tells them they shouldn’t have made it creepy. He says this when he is surrounded by a table of cheese, making the whole scene even creepier unintentional or not.
4 “She Was Dead But She Was In Her Car”
When Loretta goes missing, Alan tries to tell Beth about it. She believes him, leading to a scene wherein Alan, Beth, and Allison are talking about how to get her back. Allison is not too worried about the situation.
She brings up this story about how a friend of hers was missing in college. She reveals that she was never missing in the first place. She was dead, but she was at least in her car. Allison not getting that that story is upsetting to Beth and Alan makes it funnier in an incredibly awkward way.
3 “It’s A Classic For A Reason”
Even though Loretta wants to find this lost civilization as much as Abigail does, for her husband’s memory, she refuses to help him out. Abigail plays it off like he doesn’t care. However, unbeknownst to Loretta, Abigail’s henchmen sneak up on her and use chloroform.
When she wakes up on his plane and discovers what happens, Abigail reveals what he did. “It’s a classic for a reason” is such a sleepy thing to say to someone after they get knocked out. Daniel Radcliffe really is having the time of his life playing a villain in The Lost Cityand Sandra Bullock plays so well off of him.
2 “There’s Been So Much Chit Chat”
One of the coolest moments in the movie sees Jack Trainer, played by Brad Pitt, infiltrating Abigail’s compound with relative ease. Once he and Alan make it to Loretta, the three have a quick exchange before more guards come.
Instead of untying Loretta from the chair and hightailing it out of there, the two heroes instead put her in a wheelbarrow and run away as explosives go off. Loretta is not thrilled about the whole situation, complaining that there was indeed time to untie her.
1 “Where Were You Running, It’s A Boat”
Most of the best lines in the movie come very early on. However, there is a great line at the end of The Lost City wherein Abigail is discovered of his treachery by the police. He tries to run away but as he is on a boat, his escape is fruitless.
Oscar, played by Oscar Nunez of The Office fame, tackles Abigail to the floor and utters this line. Was Abigail going to jump off the boat and swim for it? Maybe he was going to steal the boat by knocking out the captain. Either way, it was a good thing Oscar was there to foil his plan.
