On Thursday, “The Batman” filmmaker Matt Reeves published a deleted scene from his superhero epic in which Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader faces off against his famous foe, the Joker, played by Barry Keoghan. The sequence can be accessed by visiting a website that resembles the word puzzles posed by the Riddler (Paul Dano) in the film.
According to Reeves in a February interview with Variety, the scene follows Batman’s revelation that the Riddler had murdered the Gotham City police commissioner, leaving behind another of his enigmatic letters addressed to Batman. Unnerved by the Riddler’s interest in him, Batman begins to investigate the Riddler’s motivations.
“I thought he’d be incredibly insecure about it, and he’d probably want to find some way to get into the [Riddler’s] psyche, like in ‘Manhunter’ or ‘Mindhunter’ — this idea of profiling somebody, so you can predict his next action,” Reeves explained.

The filmmaker liked the idea of hinting to the audience that Gotham is filled with criminals on the outskirts of the plot and that Keoghan’s Joker is one of Batman’s early opponents.
“Isn’t it almost our anniversary?” In the scene, the Joker tells Batman.
“You understand that they have a bond and that this guy certainly did something, and Batman somehow got him into Arkham,” Reeves said.
Batman presses Joker to explain why Riddler is acting the way he is, and why he is leaving notes for Batman at all of his crimes.
“Perhaps he’s a fan of yours?” According to the Joker. “Or maybe he has a grudge against you as well.” Perhaps you’re the main course.”
The sequence culminates with Joker teasing Batman with the uncomfortable truth that there is a part of him that agrees with Riddler’s plan to kill corrupt Gotham officials.
“I suppose you’re really afraid somewhere deep inside since you’re not convinced he’s wrong,” Joker replied, cackling.
In a previous interview with Variety, Reeves discussed why he ultimately deleted this scene but kept a follow-up scene at the end of “The Batman” in which the Joker and Riddler connect in adjacent cells in Arkham State Hospital, as well as how he developed the Joker’s look with Keoghan and makeup artist Michael Marino.
