Whatever Sony has in store for the upcoming Karate Kid film won’t have anything to do with Cobra Kai. This week, it was revealed that Sony had added a new Karate Kid movie to its 2024 launch date. There was no other information provided regarding the movie, leaving it up to conjecture as to whether it will be a fresh interpretation of the original narrative or take place in the Cobra Kai universe.
Now it seems unlikely that this will have anything to do with Cobra Kai. Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz noted on Twitter that the Cobra Kai crew is not presently associated with the mystery project in an apparent attempt to alleviate some of the concerns. Hurwitz appears to be equally knowledgeable about the Karate Kid movie as the rest of us, but he has shown his appreciation for those participating.
Hurwitz claims that the movie does not explicitly rely on Cobra Kai characters, which is important to note. The possibility that the film might still be set in the same universe as The Next Karate Kid and the original Karate Kid trilogy seems to be left open by this. However, it’s also conceivable that the movie may only offer a fresh interpretation of the subject, perhaps with the intention of kicking off a new film series with a Karate Kid story that is unrelated to the earlier films or the television series.
The Karate Kid: Will It Be Rebooted?
The Karate Kid has already had one remake that has been seen in theatres. In 2010, director Harald Zwart and writer Christopher Murphey reimagined The Karate Kid with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan in the lead roles. Despite receiving generally unfavorable reviews, the movie was a box office hit. Shortly after the release of The Karate Kid in 2010, a sequel was announced; however, it was never made.
