One of the many hallmarks of modern Bethesda RPGs is the endless number of ways players can customize their character builds to make their playthroughs unique. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim employed a progression system that rewarded players as they used particular skills. However, the Fallout franchise opted for the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system, which features perks and stats that players can choose from and improve using EXP.

In Fallout 76, Bethesda returns with the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system alongside the newly introduced Perk Cards, which allow players to create ridiculously powerful builds, especially later in the game. Fallout 76grants players much leeway with character creation, allowing them to experiment with various concepts and playstyles. While every build is unique and capable, some stand out from the rest, especially during the endgame. These builds undoubtedly are among the most formidable or versatile imaginable, making them sought-after by many.

Updated June 9, 2022, by Christopher Anaya: Fallout 76, like many other RPGs, is an everchanging video game that bends to the whims of what is considered meta. These changes result from varying factors, such as updates, reworks, or simply a shift in the community’s preferences or strategies. Alterations such as these can cause the game to undergo a dramatic transformation, as things like builds rise or fall in prominence.

While all of Fallout 76’s previous endgame builds remain relevant, others have since come into the fold. Thanks to various changes and updates in the past year, some strategies or playstyles have become more viable, and others have become immensely popular. These newly favored builds are considered among the most effective or capable presently, boasting some desired quality that allows them to stand above the rest.

12 The Tank

  • Strength
  • Endurance
  • Intelligence
  • Agility
  • Bullet Shield
  • Blocker
  • Expert Heavy Gunner
  • Lifegiver
  • Stabilized
  • Power User

The Tank build is a Power Armor-centric playstyle for those that want to dominate any foe in Fallout 76 through sheer power and formidability. Donned in Power Armor and wielding an equally impressive weapon, the Tank can endure exceptional amounts of punishment while still being able to dish it back. With the perfect distribution of attributes and combination of perks, players can become an unyielding force of carnage against even the deadliest of foes.

Prioritizing durability and resilience is a must, as players will be taking a lot of damage in the slow-moving suit. Stabilized and Heavy Gunner will increase damage substantially, while Adrenaline will provide an extra boost when fighting multiple enemies. Tanking in the power armor is a carefree way to wreak havoc in-game. The Minigun is always a good choice when using Power Armor. For players looking to take hits and return the favor in full, the Tank build is a fitting choice.

11 The Aggressor

  • Perception

  • Endurance

  • Intelligence

  • Agility

  • Adrenaline

  • Concentrated Fire

  • Critical Savvy

  • Gunsmith

  • Master Rifleman

  • Tank Killer

The Aggressor build aims to do as much damage as possible, utilizing critical hits and devastating firearms in that pursuit. Equipped with a steady rifle and trusty sidearm, the Aggressor can quickly dispatch even the heartiest enemies that dare oppose them. This build relies chiefly on a careful yet deadly efficient handling of weaponry, requiring an assortment of perks and the right attributes to accomplish this.

The key with this build is maximizing damage potential and critical hits while keeping the meter full. Players seeking to make the most of this build will want to use a rifle or pistol to take advantage of all the damage buffs. Rifles should be used against enemies from afar while reserving sidearms for short distances. Black Powder Rifles are solid choices in the rifle class, and the Crusader pistol is a great pocket weapon.

10 The Gladiator

  • Barbarian
  • Blocker
  • Grim Reaper’s Sprint
  • Lifegiver
  • Master Gladiator/Master Slugger
  • Martial Artist

For players whose playstyle harkens back to the glory days of the Roman coliseum, the Gladiator build is perhaps one of the most optimized for close-quarters combat in Fallout 76. This build sees players take the min-max approach to melee combat, sacrificing adaptability in ranged situations for raw strength. While such a playstyle seems counterintuitive, with the right weapons alongside an advantageous allocation of attributes and perks, the Gladiator is an overwhelmingly powerful build that is challenging to counteract.

As the name suggests, players must focus on improving their martial ability with melee weapons, whether one-handed or two-handed. This build boosts melee skills and increases a player’s overall formidability to endure the brutal hand-to-hand punishment they are sure to encounter. Fallout 76 features numerous melee weapons, granting players much flexibility in their armament of choice. So long as it inflicts considerable damage or attacks swiftly, it will suffice the Gladiator’s brutal means of fighting.

9 The Sniper

  • Perception

  • Intelligence

  • Agility

  • Luck

  • Better Criticals

  • Concentrated Fire

  • Four Leaf Clover

  • Longshot

  • Master Rifleman

  • Sniper

Standing in stark contrast to the Gladiator build, the Sniper build is optimal for long-ranged combat. Utilizing the build’s emphasis on stealth and damage modifiers, the Sniper can turn otherwise dangerous encounters with super mutant behemoths or other big bads into a simple task. After all, what could an enemy possibly do against a threat a significant distance away? Chances are they will not be able to rebuke the Sniper’s assault anyway, as the first shot from their trusty rifle will be all needed to dispatch a foe.

To reach the deadly efficacy of this build, players will need to focus on attributes and perks that improve their skill with a sniper rifle. In addition, enhancing their covertness will further support their sneaky yet deadly playstyle. Players can go about this in various ways, but the decision with the most weight is their weapon of choice. They can depend on a reliable Sniper Rifle or substitute for something with more power, like the devastating Gauss Rifle. This choice will rely chiefly on a player’s preferences and what is readily available.

8 The Assassin

  • Strength

  • Intelligence

  • Agility

  • Luck

  • Better Criticals

  • Incisor

  • Master Gladiator

  • Ninja

  • Secret Agent

  • Sneak

The long-lost brother of the Sniper build, the Assassin build is all about stealth. However, unlike the Sniper, the Assassin is not one to shy away from close-quarters confrontations. In truth, this build embraces short-ranged battles, relying on swift and deadly melee weapons to get the job done. These armaments become, in conjunction with the Assassin’s clandestine playstyle, makes them a threat that is difficult to counteract. Few builds can meet this one’s sheer lethality while remaining under the radar.

The Assassin must rely on various attributes, perks, and close-quarters armaments to perform effectively. Melee weapons such as Stealth Blades, Switchblades, Tire Irons, and the like will be the Assassin’s best friends, and with friends like these, who needs to worry about enemies? However, having a ranged weapon is wise as the Assassin may run into situations where one is required. Compounds Bows are a great choice because they can inflict substantial damage from a considerable distance away.

  • Strength

  • Perception

  • Intelligence

  • Luck

  • Action Boy/Girl

  • First Aid

  • Martial Artist

  • Master Commando

  • Master Rifleman

  • Weapon Artisan

For players who struggle to follow a specific path for the duration of the game or those wanting the flexibility to try and test many playstyles, the Jack of All Trades build can be a viable approach for long-time fans of the franchise and newcomers alike. While some players might view this build as a master of none, no other build offers the same mixing and matching perks or the potential to forge unusual or novel approaches to Fallout 76. The Jack of All Trades is essentially a pocketknife of a character that is challenging for enemies to counter.

The Jack of All Trade’s flexibility is their deadliest weapon, meaning players should do well to expand their proficiencies. This pursuit involves branching into different attributes, perks, and gear to ensure that the Jack of All Trades is suited for any situation. Need to sneak by a group of enemies? Face an opponent in melee combat? Pick off foes from afar? The Jack of All Trades is the right one for the job. This malleability is also represented in the gear this build uses, as players can utilize various weaponry or armor depending on the circumstances.

  • Master Heavy Gunner
  • Nerd Rage!
  • Power User
  • Robotics Expert
  • Science Master

The Mad Scientist utilizes the advancements of the Fallout universe, such as energy weapons, computer terminals, and highly-advanced robots, to their advantage. This technological leg-up makes this build exceptionally dangerous, especially later in the game, when the Mad Scientist can utilize their tech-savviness.

The Mad Scientist can improve or modify their gear immensely, using highly-advanced technology in their works. Moreover, they can use their smarts for utility uses such as bypassing terminals or constructing futuristic devices. These proficiencies require players to dedicate much to the Intelligence attribute, tech-related perks, and energy weaponry. These contributions are well worth it, as the Mad Scientists will be skilled enough to outsmart, outperform, or outgun most foes.

5 The Smooth Talker

  • Perception

  • Charisma

  • Agility

  • Luck

  • Hard Bargain

  • Quack Surgeon

  • Philanthropist

  • Team Medic

  • Tenderizer

  • Wasteland Whisperer

While many interactions in Fallout 76 eventually end with the player on the wrong end of the game’s many, many guns, there are, in fact, alternatives to fighting. For those such as the Smooth Talker who wants nothing but to avoid combat as much as possible — or get the best deals from merchants — specializing in Charisma-related perks is not a half-bad choice. Being able to smooth talk others is an underrated skill in Fallout 76, but there are other benefits to the Smooth Talker, such as supporting allies.

The Smooth Talker build can gain and grant benefits when working with others, acting as a support of sorts. These boons can make many of the stresses and dangers of Fallout 76 much more manageable. Players must invest in the Charisma attribute, relating perks, and whatever gear they see fit. While the Smooth Talker can likely solve matters diplomatically, it would be unwise to traverse the Appalachian Wasteland without any protection. So, players can choose any weapon or armor they please, as long as it performs effectively.

4 The Soldier

  • Strength

  • Perception

  • Charisma

  • Agility

  • Adrenaline

  • Basher

  • Concentrated Fire

  • Master Commando

  • Pain Train

  • Tank Killer

The Soldier build is a master of conventional combat. Assault rifles, pistols, combat knives, explosives, etc., are their domain, and they use them to their fullest extent. In conjunction with a set of formidable armor, there is little that the Soldier cannot do. They can challenge most foes and come out on top with remarkable ease. This combat prowess is chiefly due to the Soldier’s penchant for powerful, albeit lackluster, weaponry that gets the job done regardless. These qualities make for well-rounded combatants that can adapt to most situations.

Suffice it to say that the Soldier is one of the best builds a player can take for the end-game, as the breadth of skills associated with it are undeniably impressive. With this flexibility, they can effortlessly acclimate themselves to even the most unfavorable situations. Whether facing a foe in close-quarters combat or fending against one at a distance, the Soldier can handle them effectively. Few builds can compare to the extensive martial capabilities of this one, which is why the Soldier is such a famed character concept.

3 The Heavy Gunner

  • Adrenaline
  • Bear Arms
  • Bullet Shield
  • Master Heavy Gunner
  • One Gun Army
  • Stabilized

The Heavy Gunner build utilizes the most top-notch weapons in-game, full stop. No other can match the damage output of heavy weapons without the aid of perks and specializations. Thus, the Heavy Gunner build is a viable option for late and end-game players. Players should strongly consider this build if charging headlong into a room crowded with enemies is a priority or if subtlety is not. While many think the Heavy Gunner’s recklessness is their greatest weakness, it proves their greatest strength.

For the Heavy Gunner to effectively utilize hefty armaments, they must carefully allocate attributes and perks to suit this specialty. Upon doing so, they will become war machines capable of melting enemies with remarkable ease. The sheer amount of damage the Heavy Gunner can inflict in a matter of seconds is their biggest allure. It is also what makes this build such a viable and promising end-game character concept, especially considering the various bosses players will have to face later in Fallout 76.

2 The Healer

  • Endurance

  • Charisma

  • Intelligence

  • Luck

  • Field Surgeon

  • First Aid

  • Nerd Rage!

  • Pharmacist

  • Pharma Farma

  • Quack Surgeon

When traversing the wasteland of West Virginia, players will undoubtedly take more than their fair share of damage. To better combat these dangers, the Healer build works adamantly to recuperate themselves and their allies. Not only will this build be responsible for their well-being, but their teammates as well. Doing so requires the Healer to find a balance between supporting allies through medical aid and getting into the thick of combat. However, a rule of thumb is that their safety comes first, as they are the only ones capable of saving their teammates from certain death.

The Healer must contribute to recuperative attributes and perks to fulfill their role as a medic while dipping into some self-preservative boons such as Nerd Rage! This flexibility will allow them to offer their medical services and a trusty gun during battles. While the Healer will be in the heat of combat, they should keep their distance, utilizing a rifle or other long-ranged armament. They should allow their more martial-savvy teammates to take the brunt of fights, as they support from afar. So, unless the situation is especially dire, the Healer should take the backseat in most confrontations.

1 The Wild Card

  • Action Boy/Girl
  • Better Criticals
  • Bloody Mess
  • Concentrated Fire
  • Mysterious Stranger
  • Grim Reaper’s Sprint

The Wild Card build takes the seemingly unconventional approach of relying not on pure skill but lady luck. Random Number Generation (RNG) is the one factor that determines whether or not this build is the greatest or worst in the game. Critical hits, erratic drops, and visits from the Mysterious Stranger make the Wild Card build a delightfully unpredictable end-game experience that brings beneficial chaos to any fight. The strength of this build will ultimately be contingent upon whether the gamble pays off in a particular gunfight.

The Wild Card depends chiefly on the Luck attribute and relating perks with a few martial proficiencies thrown in for good measure. Aside from these requirements, this build can utilize any gear that suits a player’s preferences. However, to get the most out of the Wild Card’s unfathomable fortune, players should use high-damaging weapons such as sniper rifles or hand cannons to make use of perks that enhance critical hits like Better Criticals. With these armaments, the Wild Card can dispatch most enemies within seconds.
