May 16, 2011 saw the release of Terraria, a two-dimensional sandbox game with numerous crafting mechanics and rendered in iconic pixel art. Now, a day after the surprise 1.4.4 update was announced, the creator has teased the possibility of a sequel.

Despite being over a decade old, Terraria still boasts a devoted fanbase and constant updates to this day. It’s no surprise that a subtle yet impactful change from the game’s creator has gotten fans and non-fans talking.

Terraria creator Andrew Spinks, who uses the handle “Demilogic” on Twitter, has made a mysterious addition to the location of his Twitter profile. Usually reserved for user locations and/or other personal details, Demilogic’s account now displays “terraria 2 - a new age.” Twitter users have noticed this sudden change and multiple rumors and theories are already being discussed across social media, with the most prominent one stating that this change is a teaser announcement for a full sequel. This is especially surprising to hear for many, as rumors of Terraria 2 have been around since 2013 yet no official releases have been announced in the past nine years.

As a result of the tease, social media users are hyping up the potential announcement with talk of what they would most be looking forward to in a sequel. Reddit and Twitter posts are buzzing with sensible requests like more Transformation items, biomes, enjoyable yet challenging bosses, to less sensible examples like “girlfriends and marriage.” The artistic side of Terraria’s fanbase are also generating potential future designs and visions that could be seen in a follow-up to the immersive crafting game, as plenty of cosmetic items are available in game for players to craft and/or design themselves.

One big aspect that keeps Terraria fans coming back to the game is the prevalence of mods. Varying from slight gameplay changes to entire biome overhauls, many gamers agree mods make Terraria even better as a result. Therefore, it remains to be seen how big an overhaul that Terraria 2 could offer when there are so many pre-existing mods competing for playtime. A possible move that ReLogic may take is adapting certain fan mods and bringing them into the sequel’s lore.

Creativity is seen across Terraria’s updates and mods, ranging from new visual designs, musical accompaniment and so on. The recent 1.4.3 update added more intense enemies to battle in game, so the Terraria developers are not out of ideas yet. It remains to be seen if anything comes of this tease, but the Terraria community has nevertheless joined together to share their excitement and continued love for the trailblazing action-adventure sandbox.

Terraria is out now on 3DS, iOS, PC, PS Vita, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Switch.
