Back in August, following the launch of No More Heroes 3, series creator and director Goichi Suda, better known as Suda51, admitted that he would love to work on a video game based on a Marvel property. Among the characters he named was Deadpool, the fourth wall breaking Merc with a Mouth who Suda believes would be the perfect fit for Grasshopper Manufacture.

A lot of people seem to agree that a Deadpool game from Suda would make a lot of sense considering the slight similarities between Deadpool and No More Heroes’ protagonist Travis Touchdown, as well as Suda having experience with over-the-top action games with bloody violence and meta-comedy that frequently breaks the fourth wall. As it turns out, Suda was actually approached by Activision at one point to specifically make a Deadpool game.

In a recent interview with VGC, Suda explains that Activision had contacted him over 10 years ago with the proposal, not long after the release of the first No More Heroes game. Obviously, the project never saw the light of day, with it fizzling out very early on during the planning stages. Suda says he had come up with some cool ideas for the game but didn’t go into any further detail.

Activision did release a Deadpool action video game in 2013, which was developed by High Moon Studios (the studio behind Transformers: War for Cybertron and its sequel Fall of Cybertron) for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. It received mixed reviews at the time, with common criticisms being its repetitive gameplay and camera.

It was ported to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2015 to coincide with the 2016 Deadpool movie but has since been delisted from digital storefronts, along with all of Activision’s other Marvel video games due to licensing issues. Deadpool hasn’t had a solo video game since, only making appearances in Marvel crossover games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.

Disney has become more open to the idea of licensing its properties to other game developers. On the Marvel front, fans have already been able to enjoy two Spider-Man games from Insomniac (with a third due out in 2023), Square Enix’s Avengers, and the aforementioned Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. The future of Marvel video games is looking strong too, between Midnight Suns and a Wolverine game from Insomniac.

So, a Deadpool game from Suda isn’t outside the realm of possibility. Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool’s movie actor, even liked a tweet about the original report, which Suda is thrilled about:

“Actually, I had no idea he had liked one of my tweets, that’s awesome to find out! I’ve been a big fan of the Deadpool movies, of course, as well as Ryan Reynolds’ other films as well, so it’s really cool to hear that.

“The fact that Ryan Reynolds himself liked one of my Tweets makes me feel like I’ve taken about a hundred steps forward since then.”
