Stardew Valley is the mammoth effort made by the sole creator, ConcernedApe. Players can farm, fish, and create friendships to their hearts’ content.
Within the relaxing atmosphere, there are a couple of requirements and fetch quests that can need items that elude some players due to their inconvenient spawn rates or seasonal appearance. This guide will focus on the elusive Snow Yam - what it is, how to find it, and what players can do with it in Stardew Valley.
What Are Snow Yams?
The root vegetable in question is one of many forageable items within Stardew Valley. Like most others, it is seasonal, and can only be found in winter - above ground. They also spawn in the icy levels of the mines (levels 40-69), and can only be found with the use of a hoe, here.
How To Get Snow Yams
Thankfully, there are a handful of different ways to procure one of these pesky tubers. Note that the only way to find them in the ground is to use the hoe tool - bombs or any other tool will not work to unearth them.
The best way to get a Yam is definitely to hoe up Artifact Spots. The little worm patches appear even in winter and are the only place above ground that will reliably hold a Snow Yam. Artifact Spots in the desert can also contain Snow Yams.
Yams can be found by tilling up dirt outside of the farm area. Any tillable land has a 4% chance of spawning a Snow Yam, but this does only apply to the town areas, not on any land that is classed as the farm. Creating a Gold or Iridium Hoe can help with this, as they can cover a larger area when charged up.
Snow Yams can also be grown. If a player has a healthy supply of Winter Seeds, there is a chance that one of them will be a Snow Yam. This is the only time that they will grow/spawn above ground. When the seeds are fully grown they will be visible amongst the other crops. Winter Seeds can be obtained by completing the Winter Foraging Bundle (ironically) or can be crafted once foraging levels have been upped.
What To Do With Them
There are a few uses for the elusive snow yam within Stardew Valley;
- Used to complete/add to Winter Foraging Bundle in the Community Center. Can be given as a gift to villagers. Used to create a shirt in the Sewing Machine. Can be requested randomly on the Help Wanted sign in Winter.
In terms of gifting the Snow Yam - there are a few characters that absolutely crave the cold vegetable. Linus, Leah, and Harvey love the gift. But beware - Maru absolutely hates it. Most others will tolerate and accept it as a gift.
Stardew Valley was released on February 16, 2016, and is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and mobile.
