Star Wars: The Old Republic was released before the franchise’s acquistion by Disney, but is still alive and kicking to this day. In an unforeseen move, BioWare has released a new 4K remaster of one Star Wars: The Old Republic’s original trailers.
It may be hard to believe but Star Wars: The Old Republic is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The successful MMORPG expanded both the mythos and gameplay of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games, allowing players to create their own character from Jedi to bounty hunter to Sith, and experience a galaxy far, far away like never before. In the greater scale of the franchise, The Old Republic sits in a strange place, being one of the last games released prior to Disney’s acquisition of Star Wars, and is packed to the brim with lore and content that has been canonized to various extents. BioWare announced as part of the The Old Republic celebration that a new expansion titled Legacy of the Sith is on the way.
BioWare has released a 4K remaster of the Deceived cinematic trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic. The trailer was created by Blur Studio and released originally on June 1, 2009, over two years before The Old Republic would finally launch. In the trailer, Darth Malgus—a highly popular, yet currently non-canon Sith lord—assaults the Jedi temple on Coruscant, crashing a ship full of Sith warriors into the temple, leading to a beautiful yet chaotic clash between the dark and the light. At the time, with the Star Wars films having been concluded, this trailer provided serious Star Wars spectacle that had not been seen in years.
It is in part of its work on these The Old Republic trailers that Blur Studio is as well-recognized as it is today. Decieved holds up to this day visually with well-realized models and environments, and most importantly, animations and pacing. BioWare plans on re-releasing the rest of The Old Republic’s trailers in 4K, another of which was done by Blur Studio, that being the Hope trailer. Blur Studio has since worked on many other games including the remastered cutscenes of Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo Wars 2, Titanfall, and countless others.
Between the Legacy of the Sith expansion and these remastered trailers, it seems like BioWare is treating its players well this year. 10 years later and Star Wars: The Old Republic is worth revisiting in thanks to BioWare’s continued support of the game, which stands in contrast to the difficulty of some of Star Wars’ other video game endeavors i.e. the lootbox controversy of Star Wars Battlefront 2. If The Old Republic isn’t one’s speed though, there are many other Star Wars games that fans can currently play and expect in the coming years.
