Late actress, Nichelle Nichols’s asses will reportedly be launched into space later this year. She is known for her role as Lieutenant Uhura on the original Star Trek TV series.
Celestis, a private company, which conducts memorial spaceflights, will carry her ashes into about 186 million miles in the space. They stated this information on Friday. The ashes will be carried aboard on a Vulcan Centaur rocket.
CEO, Charles M. Chafer of Celestis mentioned that they are honored to add Nichelle Nichols to the Enterprise Flight manifest. He also stated that now their Enterprise Flight will have on board the person who signified the vision of Star Trek as diverse, inclusive and exploration of the universe.
Nichol died at the age of 89. She was one of the first Black actress to feature on a leading role in a network TV series. She broke color barriers with her ventures. She also helped NASA in the recruitment of women and minorities to be astronaut candidates.
The discussed rocket will be launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It is meant to carry more than 200 capsules that would contain ashes, messages of greetings and DNA samples. The flight would also include ashes of other Star Trek figures. This includes series creator Gene Roddenberry, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, James Doohan and Doughlas Trumbull.
