Worldwide fans of Squid Game have been clamoring for a sequel season to the series, especially after the open-ended ending of the first season. Now, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has confirmed that Squid Game will “absolutely” be returning for a second season.
Squid Game is one of Netflix’s biggest ever financial hits. The Netflix series follows Seong Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-jae) as a gambling addict and struggling single father who accepts an invitation to participate in a mysterious game show known as Squid Game, only to discover the game’s trademark life-and-death stakes. In addition to Lee Jung-jae, the series stars a slew of notable South Korean stars including HoYeon Jung, Park Hae-soo, Anupam Tripathi, Kim Joo-ryoung, Wi Ha-joon, Gong Yoo, Lee Byung-Hun, and O Yeong-su, the latter of whom won a Golden Globe Award for playing the elderly contestant Oh Il-nam.
Sarandos confirmed the development of Squid Game’s second season during Netflix’s fourth-quarter earnings call last Thursday, stating that “the Squid Game universe has just begun.” Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has previously discussed the development of a second and third season of Squid Game, though today’s development is the first internal confirmation of a series continuation from the streamer itself. Upon its success last September, Squid Game launched many of its cast members into international super stardom overnight and has since captured the imagination and curiosity of viewers around the world.
Squid Game is one of the biggest sleeper hit success stories in recent memory. The series broke countless viewership records and has wedged a place for itself in the widespread pop culture zeitgeist. Many homages such as Steam battle royale Crab Game have been made in the series’ wake, while Mr. Beast was also motivated by the show to recreate the iconic sets in order to host his own version of Squid Game for a now-legendary YouTube video.
Fans are surely excited by Sarandos’ confirmation of Squid Game season 2, as a second season has a lot of possibilities for new challenges as well as a further exploration of the company behind the deadly game. It is also heartwarming to see Netflix’s interest in the continued success of a non-English series such as Squid Game. Fans around the world are certainly eager to tune in and see what happens next, however long production on the second season might take.
Squid Game is now available on Netflix.
