Splitgate has been this summer’s surprise success, rocketing to the top of the most-played charts and earning widespread praise for being a throwback to classic arena shooter games. There are many who believe in Splitgate’s potential to become even bigger, hence why the 1047 Games just received a massive $100 million investment. This investment will allow the developers to expand on their vision for Splitgate, which will apparently include a Forge Mode equivalent at some point down the line.

Splitgate’s Halo inspirations are no secret, with the game often being described as a mix between Halo and Portal. Considering this, it’s not surprising in the least that Splitgate will eventually ape some of Halo’s popular game modes and features, with Forge being an obvious choice. Splitgate made the announcement that its Forge Mode, which will allow players to edit maps, will be available before Halo Infinite gets its Forge Mode.

Splitgate made this announcement in response to a KFC Gaming tweet that asked how one would trigger an entire game fanbase with one sentence. “Splitgate will have forge mode before Halo Infinite,” the tweet read, with an added apology to Halo fans. We already know Halo Infinite won’t have Forge at launch, and likely won’t until months after the fact, which means Splitgate’s Forge could come anytime between now and early 2022. Of course, Halo Infinite will have a full-fledged campaign mode, which Splitgate does not have, so it’s not like Splitgate is necessarily trumping Halo Infinite in the game modes department.

Right now, Splitgate is in Season 0 of its game, pushing back its release date to better flesh things out, improve server stability, and prepare more content. Splitgate Season 1 will presumably coincide with the game’s proper release date, though official plans have yet to be announced at the time of this writing. Maybe if fans are lucky, the planned Forge mode will be part of the Splitgate Season 1 update, though that remains to be seen.

Splitgate’s massive success is seeing the developers branch out into other genres as well, though the focus will remain on the popular first-person shooter. 1047 Games wants to revive other dormant genres in the way that it did the arena shooter for Splitgate, though specifics on those plans have yet to be revealed. For now, fans can expect 1047 Games to keep producing new content for Splitgate, and it may be quite some time before concrete information about its future, non-Splitgate projects come to light.

Splitgate is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
