The highly discussed film brought in an estimated $1.003 billion, with more presumably on the way in the coming weeks and months.
This achievement makes Spider-Man: No Way Home the 10th film ever to cross the $1 billion mark overseas. The feat certainly garners excitement for Marvel Studios and Sony, but the tea leaves seemed to point toward this development invariably. The film swung into theatres on December 17th and became the first $1 billion film domestically since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The web-slinging superhero crossed that fantastic mark domestically after only 12 days in theatres, which stemmed from the excitement in audiences to experience the adventure despite the looming threat of the coronavirus pandemic. The film is starting to make its overseas rounds, and it’s clear that it still has a lot of gas left in the tank.
The estimated $1.003 billion brings the film’s global earnings to $1.74 billion, making Spider-Man: No Way Home the 6th highest-grossing film of all time behind Marvel Studios Avengers: Infinity War. Over the weekend, the groundbreaking Spider-Man: No Way Home earned $21.1 million at international box offices, which is incredible since the film has yet to release in China. Major Hollywood projects found it challenging to enter the Chinese market last year and continue to sit in limbo. None of the films, such as Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, have been banned by the government, but it’s unclear if the films will ever release. Despite China’s absence, Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to elevate overseas, breaking records across other markets.
The sensational Spider-Man: No Way Home has become the top-grossing superhero project in the United Kingdom, earning $120.1 million, making it the 6th highest-grossing film of all time in the UK. However, the train doesn’t stop there for the Jon Watts-directed film, which has become the highest-grossing superhero project of all-time in 19 different territories. It’s hard to ignore the film’s impact and the growth it has accumulated since its December release. Spider-Man: No Way Home carries a particular kind of magic that is hard to replicate because of the generational bridge it forms. Fans of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire can gather together with those whose first experience with the beloved character began with Tom Holland’s emergence into the role. The numbers don’t lie and further help to highlight the enriching experience the film has generated for audiences worldwide.
Domestically, Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to do well despite unforeseeable weather conditions in the east. Unfortunately, the box office has been relatively slow in January, with little to offer for audiences to dive into collectively. Scream has been one of the biggest releases of the year so far, but its reign at the top was short-lived and supplanted by Spider-Man: No Way Home in a week. Numerically, the web-slinging hero brought in $11 million domestically over the weekend, bringing its total to $735.9 million. The film currently sits 4th behind 3rd place Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time. Where this film will rest when it’s all said and done is unclear, but if audiences continue to flock to theatres then even more history will be made before the final curtain closes.
There appear to be no limitations hindering Spider-Man: No Way Home and its accomplishments, which one can only assume will continue to grow globally. Crossing $1 billion domestically and internationally is impressive, especially while trying to navigate the looming coronavirus pandemic. Moreover, the success of the Marvel Studios and Sony film continues to spark optimism for other projects on the horizon, which hope to experience a similar level of success.
