A day before the second official trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home released, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures showcased a new Multiversal poster for the much-awaited film. The poster, shared on the studios’ social media pages, featured the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Green Goblin, and Doc Ock’s tentacles. What both studios probably didn’t see coming were a slew of negative comments in response to the poster.
Ever since the new poster for Spider-Man: No Way Home appeared online, social media users have been roasting Sony for the artwork. Fans of the franchise are not pleased with the second poster for the film and are calling out the studio for presenting it as official artwork. They claim that there is better fan art available online and perhaps the studio should have just used one of them.
A thread on Reddit dedicated to the new Spider-Man: No Way Home poster has fans making jokes about the artwork and complaining over its content. Most fans are displeased with the fact that Doc Ock’s tentacles are blurry and out of focus, even though the art aimed to hint at their movement. Fans believe that the art team didn’t do its due diligence, and believe that they used a photo editing software to remove stills from the first trailer and use them on the poster, instead of using images.
Many fans on the r/marvelstudios subreddit thread compare the poster to previous ones released for other Spider-Man films and find a similar pattern. Most of the posters seem to have cutouts of the various characters, placed haphazardly on to the artwork. The savage comments from fans continue to flow in, with many referring to it as “something you would find at a flea market,” or it seems like something “out of a child’s sticker book.” There are also several expletive comments, with fans urging Sony to “hire better designers.”
This isn’t the first poster released for the film. Last week, the first official poster for Spider-Man: No Way Home was unveiled and for the first time showcased Green Goblin in all his glory. Apart from that, the poster seemed to contain several Easter eggs that pointed at the return of other villains from the different Spider-Man films. Fans have theorized for long that the Sinister Six would be appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the first poster seemed to hint the same. Perhaps more will be revealed when the second official trailer arrives.
Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres in theaters on December 17, 2021.
