As of the time of writing, there are currently just under 900 distinct species of Pokemon. With everything from a mouse that shoots lightning to a dragon that also happens to be an apple pie, Pokemon is a series that has always sought to generate new concepts and designs. Even though some of these Pokemon designs are met with poor reception by fans and critics, developer Game Freak is still able to pump out plenty of new Pokemon with each new game and region.
With Pokemon designs being inspired by anything from mythology to household objects, some fans have even made their own Pokemon and regions. Fan creations have been around for almost as long as the series of Pokemon itself, and there are some who among the artists and creators making their own Pokemon that are seeking to create their own fan-made Pokemon game, complete with a new region and Pokemon to fill it.
It appears though, that there’s no need for a Pokemon fan to have a certain set of artistic skills to create their own Pokemon. As Max Woolf on Twitter has proved, all it takes to create Pokemon is an AI bot and the will to force it to look at every Pokemon ever created. Many fans immediately took to Twitter to praise Woolf’s creations, with some wishing for the AI Pokemon to be implemented into an official title.
While the possibility of Woolf’s Pokemon making their way to a game seems small, the AI creations certainly look as though they’d fit within a Game Freak title. As the designs are AI creations based on previous Pokemon, the newly created pocket monsters hold a familiarity to them. This is by no means the first time a gamer has used AI to create a tribute or fanart for a game. One gamer used AI to create a hyper-realistic photo of Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2.
Though fanart and fan creations usually give brilliant hypothetical additions to the Pokemon games, there are some official new Pokemon coming soon to fans. With the upcoming release of Pokemon: Legends Arceus, players are sent back in time to an early version of the Sinnoh region, once known as the Hisuian region. Hisuian variations on existing Pokemon like Growlithe, Braviary and Zoroak have already been revealed, alongside entirely new Pokemon such as the Bug and Rock type Kleavor. It seems then, that new Pokemon will continue to be revealed so long as there are fans to create art, and new games to be released.
